This tenement house is an address in the very heart of the Old Town, where history is not closed in a museum, but present every day and ready for your arrival.
From a medieval house to an urban tenement
The beginnings of this place date back to the 14th century. That is when the first brick, single-story building was constructed. Over time, the tenement grew along with the city. In the 15th century, it gained additional floors and a rear wing, and in the following centuries it was expanded and transformed.
In the 16th century, an activity appeared here that perfectly fits the intellectual character of Krakow. Mateusz Siebeneicher established a printing office in the tenement, and his son Jakub opened a bookstore in 1593. After his death, the place was run for several years by Anna Siebeneicherowa, and then the tenement passed into the hands of Stanisław Germański.
This is one of those addresses that have been part of the city's life for centuries, not only its architecture but also its culture and daily life.
Frescoes that tell their own story
In the 19th century, the interiors of the tenement gained a classical character. To this day, on the first floor, wall paintings depicting a seaport and a rocky shore with a waterfall, seen through an elegant colonnaded loggia, have been preserved.
This is a detail that is impossible to overlook – and at the same time one of the most unique elements of this place. The frescoes are an example of the decoration of a bourgeois interior, where art was a natural part of everyday life.
Fire, reconstruction, and new life
In 1850, the great fire of Krakow also affected this tenement – its top floor was completely destroyed. The reconstruction was completed in 1876, restoring the building's form.
In the 20th century, the tenement underwent a thorough renovation, and in 1976 it was entered into the register of historic monuments along with the printing office and courtyard. Thanks to this, it has preserved its historic character to this day.
