Which district to stay in Krakow?

This is one of the most frequently asked questions by people planning a stay in Krakow. The city offers many different districts and neighborhoods, and each part of Krakow has its own character, advantages, and loyal residents.

However, if you are coming to Krakow for a weekend, a few days of sightseeing, or a short business trip, the answer is usually simpler than it might seem.

Most Krakow districts are great for living but not necessarily for a short tourist stay. If you are visiting Krakow for a few days, the best choice is usually the Old Town, Kazimierz, or possibly Podgórze.

Why? Because it is here that the most important attractions, restaurants, cafes, and places that most people want to see during their visit to Krakow are located.

Old Town – the best location for most tourists

If you are visiting Krakow for the first time, it is hard to find a better choice.

This is where the Main Market Square, Cloth Hall, St. Mary's Basilica, Planty Park, and Wawel Castle are located. Most attractions can be explored on foot, without the need for public transportation or taxis.

The biggest advantage of the Old Town is saving time. Instead of spending several dozen minutes on daily commutes, you can step out of the apartment and start sightseeing immediately.

Advantages of staying in the Old Town

  • proximity to the most important attractions of Krakow,

  • the possibility of exploring on foot,

  • the largest selection of restaurants and cafes,

  • the city's historic atmosphere,

  • excellent communication with other parts of Krakow.

Kazimierz – atmosphere, history, and great gastronomy

Kazimierz has long been one of the most beloved parts of Krakow by both residents and tourists.

The former Jewish district enchants with its unique atmosphere, monuments, cafes, and restaurants. It is a place that allows you to see a more local side of the city while remaining very close to the Main Market Square.

A walk from Kazimierz to the Old Town takes only a few minutes.

Advantages of staying in Kazimierz

  • unique atmosphere,

  • rich gastronomic offer,

  • numerous cultural events,

  • proximity to the center,

  • more local character compared to the Market Square area.

Podgórze – a quieter alternative

For years, Podgórze has remained somewhat in the shadow of the Old Town and Kazimierz, but today it is one of the most interesting parts of Krakow.

Located on the other side of the Vistula River, it offers more tranquility while still being close to the center. It is a good option for people who have already visited Krakow or want to avoid the busiest tourist areas.

Among other things, Podgórze is home to the Vistula Boulevards, Krakus Mound, and many interesting restaurants and cafes.

Zabłocie – a modern part of Krakow

It is also worth mentioning Zabłocie. Although many people consider it a separate district, it is actually an area within Podgórze.

In recent years, Zabłocie has undergone a huge transformation. Former industrial areas have turned into a modern part of the city full of restaurants, cafes, and new residential investments.

It is also home to MOCAK – the Museum of Contemporary Art, which we frequently recommend to our guests looking for less obvious attractions in Krakow.

Grzegórzki – a good choice for business trips

If you are coming to Krakow primarily for business, it is worth considering Grzegórzki.

It is one of the best-connected parts of the city. Nearby are the Unity Centre, Fabryczna City with its conference center, and the Main Railway Station.

Grzegórzki allow combining convenient access to Krakow's business area with relatively quick arrival at the Old Town.

What about other districts of Krakow?

Krakow is much more than the center, Kazimierz, or Podgórze.

Among popular districts are also:

Krowodrza

One of the most valued residential districts of Krakow. Green, well-connected, and very comfortable for living.

Bronowice

A quiet part of the city with developed infrastructure and convenient access to the center.

Prądnik Biały

A dynamically developing district with new residential investments and improving public transport.

Prądnik Czerwony

A popular residential location, especially among people working in the northern part of the city.

Czyżyny

A modern district with many new housing estates and recreational areas.

Nowa Huta

One of the most characteristic parts of Krakow. Interesting in terms of architecture and history but located relatively far from the city center.

Mistrzejowice

A quiet residential district well connected with other parts of the city.

Bieńczyce

A typical residential part of Krakow with developed local infrastructure.

Wzgórza Krzesławickie

One of the most distant parts of the city from the center, appreciated mainly by residents.

Łagiewniki

Known primarily for the Divine Mercy Sanctuary, visited by pilgrims from all over the world.

Borek Fałęcki

A quiet area located in the southern part of Krakow.

Swoszowice

A district known among other things for its spa and a large amount of green areas.

Podgórze Duchackie

A popular residential district located in the southern part of the city.

Bieżanów-Prokocim

A large residential district which includes, among other things, the University Hospital.

However, it is worth remembering that most of these locations are attractive primarily to Krakow residents or people visiting specific places. For example, accommodation near Prokocim can be an excellent choice for people connected to the University Hospital.

However, if you are coming to Krakow for sightseeing, a weekend trip, or a short holiday, the farther districts usually mean more time spent on trams, buses, or taxis.

So, where is the best place to stay in Krakow?

For most tourists, the answer remains unchanged:

  1. Old Town

  2. Kazimierz

  3. Podgórze and Zabłocie

  4. Grzegórzki (especially for business trips)

These locations allow you to make the most of your time in Krakow and enjoy the city without daily commuting.
